Reading Negative Reviews on My Favorite Books

I saw this on YouTube one time and it seemed like an interesting topic to write about. But oh boy... Am I ready for this? I don't know. These books... They're my babies. I need to protect them at all costs!

However, I'm also curious as to what y'all are saying behind my back. So, let's do this.

Reading Negative Reviews on (some of) My Favorite Books

Sometimes I don't like reading reviews because I feel like they may alter my opinion on the book. Especially if I just finished it. But there are some book I will never stop loving no matter what and no one's opinion could ever change that. ;)

Disclaimer: I just want to say that I respect everyone's opinions and you are definitely entitled to them. This is in no way, whatsoever, a mock of that. I already know that the books I love most have flaws and are definitely not perfect in the eyes of others. Every book is different for every person and I LOVE THAT. Okay? Okay.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before

I've read this book so many times, I've lost count. o-o But y'all already know how much I freaking love this book and the characters and the baking and Peter Kavinsky and the cute fluff and the baking and the Peter Kavinsky...

But yeah. I read this book when it was first released and it took me by surprise. o.O I fell in love with it more than I thought I would. So, let's see what some people have to say about this sweet baby.

"There are certain lines that you do not cross, and coveting your beloved sister's ex-boyfriend is one of them. That's why this book made me gag a little. This book was purposeless. There was no ending. There was no romance. There was no character growth (and the main character was pretty dumb to begin with)."

My reaction:

*sitting at table*
*scratches head*
*sips water*
*shrugs*

...I'm sorry this book made you gag. o-o (I have a feeling this person was #TeamJosh.)

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda

I think I've made it pretty obvious how much I love this book... *searches bad reviews whilst eating Oreos*

"The only part I really enjoyed was the scene of Simon finally meeting Blue. And it's not just the twee-ness and forced cuteness of it all that I don't find entertaining anymore. Too many Oreos, and Reese's cups, and cookies, so many of them!"

It took me a little bit to find a negative review on this one and I certainly did not expect Oreos to be one of the causes of this... Oh well, more for Simon and Blue!

Everything, Everything

I am quite aware of the controversial opinions on this book. Even I might agree with some of them if I hadn't enjoyed it as much as I did. o.O

"Generic Teen Book on Steroids."

...BWHAHAHAHA. I'M DEAD. HANDS DOWN, THE BEST REVIEW.

The Fault in Our Stars

I know that John Green also has controversy on his books. Even I have to agree because I've read four books by him and only two were my favorites. He just has a different writing style that may only suit some readers. But this book is one of my favorites. It baffles me to know that I read it five years ago... WHAT? It definitely calls for a re-read.

"I have inside jokes on how stupid and shallow this book is."

...are they good inside jokes? Please share with me. I have f.o.m.o. o-o

Carry On

I'M SO SCARED FOR THIS ONE Y'ALL. I think I've made it pretty obvious that this has to be my all time favorite book of all time. And you must know that I have a terrible time picking favorites.

Alright... I guess I better suit up for battle then. *proceeds by putting in faux fangs and wearing Snowbaz merch from head to toe*

"To me Carry On felt like a bad joke."

The best bad joke EVER. *chuckles and nudges the person next to me* Huh? Am I right or am I right? ...Please agree with me.

TALK TO ME

Well, I surprisingly had an even better time writing that than I thought I would! I'm excited to do something like this again. o.O HAVE YOU EVER READ A NEGATIVE REVIEW ON YOUR FAVORITE BOOK? How did it make you feel? Did you agree with any of it? WHAT IS A BOOK YOU LOVE BUT EVERYONE HATES? Let's chat!

    1. Thank you so much for reading! I'm glad you enjoyed the post. ;) I mean, I understand that everyone has their reasons for disliking a book but... I think we needed more oreos in Simon, to be honest. Hehehe.

  4. 👏WE 👏 LOVE 👏 A 👏 GENERIC 👏 TEEN 👏 BOOK 👏 ON 👏 STEROIDS👏

I've read most of these books and can agree they're a little cheesy but that's part of the appeal right? It's impossible to have too many cookies!! I try to stay away from reviews of my favorite books because I KNOW some people aren't interested, but to each their own right? I recommend Every Exquisite Thing by Matthew Quick because it's a little bit like All The Bright Places and Everything Everything had a baby! xo

Right? It's OKAY to be cheesy. ;) EXACTLY. If I really love a book, I'm gonna want to fangirl over it with people who equally love it. ^-^ Ohhhmyyyygoshhhh, I don't think I've heard of that??? I'M DEFINITELY ADDING IT TO MY TBR ASAP. <3

Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

  5. I feel like the equivalent of this for me is sharing a favorite album with someone and having them lowkey hate it. And then crumbling into a million pieces bahaha! This was such a cool angle for a post and I loved reading your thoughts. How could someone base a negative review on the abundance of Oreos and Reeses, though? Is that seriously ever a bad thing?? LOL! I can totally get that some of these books might not be everyone's cup of tea but I genuinely enjoyed most of them! :) Merry Christmas Eve, Kenzie!

    1. OH MY GOSH, THAT IS THE WORST FEELING EVER. I don't know if that has ever happened to me, exactly, but I definitely can relate. Sometimes I'll feel so passionate over a book and recommend it to eVERYONE and if ONE person isn't into it, that'll bother me more. XD Thank you so much for reading, Erin! I'm so happy you enjoyed the post. <3 I hope you had a lovely holiday as well. ^-^
