NaNoWriMo 2017 (Monthly Wrap-Up)

I DID IT, Y'ALL! YOUR KENZIE SURVIVED NANOWRIMO 2017! I say this calls for a pizza celebration! Who is with me? I'll get the plates.

My NaNoWriMo 2017 Experience

It was... n't that bad. I mean, I didn't rip out all my hair and I managed to get to the daily word goal*, which was about 1,660+ words. But yeah. I was able to write every single day for one whole month. Alone. All on my own. And... I WON I WON I WON. *insert dance party here*

Words: 50,560
Pages: 170

minus the three days when I just couldn't, you know, write the words

What is NaNoWriMo?

I got asked this one or twice when November began because I just couldn't stop talking about it. So, NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month and it is basically a challenge to write 50,000 words in one month. That's not that bad, you say? It's a lot more than you think. It's basically like writing a four-page paper every day for a month.

But a lot more fun.

What is your novel about?

I am not going to talk too much about my novel at the moment because I feel like I have already talked about it enough and if I keep talking about it, I'm going to be putting it on an even higher pedestal. And if you must know... I am very short.

However, I will give you a small gist of what it is about. *intense drumroll* ... I first got the idea for this novel three years ago, but it wasn't until this year that I decided I want to get it written. It's a fantasy novel set some time in the future but has past aspects. If that makes sense. There are two kingdoms that joined together but fell apart when one of the kings decides that his way is the best and kills the other king. The novel centers around the princess, Cath, who later joins a rebel group in hopes to get a plan to annihilate the evil king.

And there may or may not be a love triangle. ;)

Since I am terrible at explaining things, have a glance at my Pinterest board and playlist! (I'm pretty obsessed with both.)

My General Experience

It wasn't my first time participating, but it was the first time I have ever won by myself. Which, not to brag or anything, makes me feel kind of accomplished. I had many days where I didn't even know what to write. But... with the help of Fighter's Block (special thanks to Katie for mentioning this on her blog and saving my life forever) I was able to survive the horrors of words needing to be written. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE MEETING YOUR WORD COUNT. PLUS, YOU GET TO FIGHT A MONSTER WHILE WRITING A NOVEL. HOW COOL IS THAT?

I managed to snap a few photos of me in action if you are interested in seeing them. (You don't have much of a choice because I'm posting them anyway.)

Day One

This was taken November 1st, the day after Halloween. I was getting over a cold at the time, just in case you are wondering why there is a roll of toilet paper next to me (thanks, mama). I basically sat in my dad's recliner the entire day, picking through candy from the previous night and trying not to blow my head off whenever I sneezed.

I ended up writing 2,000+ words, which was so helpful. If you are able to write over a thousand words on day one, you're set for the rest of the month.

Where I wrote

I actually didn't end up writing in my room as much as I thought I would. I did write in it towards the end of the night and occasionally early in the morning when I didn't feel like getting out of bed.

I pretty much resided in the comfy recliner for the rest of the month. I highly suggest getting one of these bad boys if you are participating in NaNo so your tush is comfortable 24/7.

My first NaNoWriMo write-in!

When I heard about NaNo write-ins, I immediately checked to see if my library had one. And they did!

Even though I missed the first write-in, my sister and I ended up being the only ones who showed at this one. o-o It was a little awkward at first because it was held in this room with glass doors and windows all around and everyone kept staring at us when they walked by.

But within ten minutes, we made ourselves comfortable and played with the whiteboard. Eventually, we silently prayed that no one would come in and interrupt us. ;)

Weening closer to the end...

Despite the holidays, I was able to still keep my word count up. I did plan a short outline a few days before November 1st, but I found myself veering away from that. Which is totally okay, writers. If you find yourself going in a different direction than you had intended, then let yourself go there. Plus, to be honest, my outline was poop. And I had already mentally planned the whole book out in my head. I'm not exactly sure if that was a good thing because, while writing, I found myself feeling really intimidated. I'll explain why in a few moments because I want to let you all know YES, I DID WRITE WHILE EATING PIZZA.

Final thoughts...

Like I said before, I got very intimidated by my novel because it just wasn't turning out like I had imagined. I mean, I did write the scenes I wanted to write and I did make it go in the direction I had intended, but IDK MAN IT JUST FEELS KINDA MEH. I found myself thinking about how my characters felt the same. I turned to my sister, asking for advice and her response was:

"And that is when you need to throw a squirrel at someone's face."

I did just that, my friends.

I still feel intimidated by it all, but I am hoping that I can fix all that whilst I am editing. Hopefully I haven't set myself up for failure. I actually haven't even finished the novel yet. I still have to write the ending. o-o But the good news is, I have some ideas (don't want to spoil anything for you guys) which I am very excited about.

All in all, I am sentimental about NaNo being over. The thought of writing alongside other writers/authors makes everything feel less... scary. But I am happy to take a break (after I write the ending) and focus on some other things. I've been feeling very anxious lately and I think I just need to do some reading to cool myself down.

Much love for all of those who participated (or wanted to participate) from your pizza loving, word writing red-head.

xx Kenzie

Talk to me!

Did you participate in NaNoWriMo? How did it go? DID YOU ATTEND ANY AWKWARD MEET-INs? Is your novel scaring you as much as mine is scaring me? ARE YOU READY FOR CHRISTMAS? Because I'm not. I'm 100% ready for nothing. If the world was ending, I would not be ready. I am so far from ready that I am beyond capable of ever being ready for anything.

YOU SHOULD DO IT! Obviously, write-ins are all probably different. You might have a different experience than myself. I don't know; it was pretty awkward but I had fun with my sister. Plus, I found that I write better when I am in my own habitat... But hey, you'll never know unless you try, and I'm all for encouraging people to step outside their comfort zones. :)

HAPPY DECEMBER NOOR! I hope you have a fabulous one! <3 Thank you for reading.

  4. Many, many congrats on winning NaNo!! *fistbump*

I had the same problem, wow. I tried to write in my room, but it DID NOT WORK AT ALL. I sat on my recliner the entire time - comfy seats are essential - I feel you.

SAME. It's the feeling when NaNo ends and you think, "Now what am I going to do beside write all the time?" I did hardly anything else during November, and now this month is crammed with stuff - most of it has nothing to do with writing. I don't even know if I'll have time to write this month. It's all the momentum I built up during NaNo, has come to a crashing halt and my story is left behind in the dust.

So I relate to this post a lot, a lot.
    cheers.
    k.

p.s. Ahhh, I really want to see those photos, but they aren't displaying for me either! I don't know if it's my computer or yours…

    1. *fist bumps you back* Thank you so much, Keira! It truly means a lot. <3

Yesss. Plus, it's really hard to write in bed. I don't know why, you'd think it would be the ideal place to write but it's just not. It's like my body needs to be sitting in a specific angle with my arms resting in a certain way. Wow, I just realized how needy I am. XD

UGH, PREACH IT GIRL! It feels so weird not to *have* to write. I told myself that I would take a break through december and focus on all the other things that are calling for me to get done, but I can't help but feel my fingers ache with the need to write. Maybe that is a good thing? I don't know. I just hope I can continue this feeling of momentum, like you said, when January rolls around.

Maybe we need to do our own NaNo? Something shorter and more laid back so that we can do other things while making sure that our writing gets done. <-- WOW YOU JUST GAVE ME AN INCREDIBLE IDEA. THANK YOU.

Thank you so much for reading! Also, I'm so sorry about the photos! I think it was my fault- I had copied and pasted them into my post rather than just downloaded them (aka I was trying to take the easy way out but I guess that didn't work).

      Have a lovely day!

  8. YAY ASDFGHJKL wow Kenzie I'm so proud and happy for you! Your Pinterest board is gorgeous (and just had a flick through your playlist, and whilst I don't know all the songs, I know most and they are great choices!

Also, Fighter's Block is so cool - thanks for sharing that!!

I did participate in NaNoWriMo this year - I didn't win (but I wasn't expecting to.. I set myself a personal goal of 25k), and I ended the month with 24.5k (which obviously is so frustrating, but I did a whole post like this explaining it), but I'm still so so proud.

Also, I love the snowballs!! CONGRATS, you should be insanely proud and let's have some pizza to celebrate aha

OH MY GOSH, CONGRATS LEXIE! Even if you didn't win or reach your goal, you definitely make progress and that is what counts! Like I said above, as long as you have the desire to write, I think that is just amazing. <3 You should totally be proud of yourself. :)
